PORTUGAL, Joel Entered into eternal rest on the morning of Tuesday March 4, 2008, Joel Portugal, widower of Elizabeth Louise Portugal. Residence, Johns Island, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services Friday, March 7, 2008 at eleven o'clock at the graveside in Beth Elohim Cemetery. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Thursday between four and six o'clock. Joel was born May 28, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Abraham I. Portugal and Freda Denawetz Portugal. He was a retired Musician and the past president of the Charleston Musicians Union. Mr. Portugal served with the United States Army and was a member of Beth Elohim Temple. He is survived by one step-son, John Burtoft, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Hickory, NC; one step-daughter, Pat Smith and her husband Rodney of Lovington, NM; one sister, Charlotte P. Libater of Charleston, SC; five step-grandchildren; sixteen step great grandchildren; three nephews, David Bluestone of Centerville, MA, William Bluestone of Edison, NJ and Lawrence M. Libater of Charleston, SC; two nieces, Freda Birnbaum of New York City and Hannah Lieberman of Westfield, NJ. He is predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Portugal Bluestone and Eleanor Mae Portugal.
